WHAT IT TAKES TO...
Save a drowning child midrun
While running along the Trinity River
in Fort Worth, Texas, in March, MARK
WARD saw people in the water calling
for help. Ward, 52, a marathoner and
former competitive swimmer, swam 25
yards to find two women holding up
a boy. He grabbed the 6-year-old and
swam to safety. (The women made their way back to shore.)
“I was on my second run of the day, and I never run twice a day.
It makes me wonder if I was there for a reason. It has given me
a perspective on my purpose in this world.” —GAIL KISLEVITZ

L OOKING FOR a place to kick off
your marathon training? Consider renting Deena Kastor’s townhouse (pictured at left). In 2007, Kastor
and her husband, Andrew, built a “
running condo” less than a mile from their
home in Mammoth Lakes. “We live in our
favorite spot in the world,” Kastor says.
“We wanted to share it with people who
share our passion for running.”
Kastor provides guests with
a map of three running
routes from the condo. She personally
measured each route
with a Garmin Forerunner, and made
laminated cards with directions that can
be tucked into your shorts. Guests also
receive an autographed water bottle and
card (pictured below)—and if Kastor’s in
town, she’ll stop by for a visit.
The three-story townhouse has a bedroom and bathroom on every level, plus
a gourmet kitchen and a
deck with a grill and hot
tub. It rents for $230 a
night with a discount if
you stay five-plus nights
(visit vrbo.com/185669).
